Kansas City's gaming community is one of the most institutionally organized in the Midwest. The Role-Players Guild of Kansas City (RPGKC) has been a nonprofit gaming organization since 1990 — a 35+ year run that makes it one of the longest-continuously-operating gaming clubs in the country. That infrastructure shapes what the KC gaming scene looks like: organized, community-focused, welcoming, and connected to the broader hobby world in ways that newer communities don't have.
The Kansas City Metro Gaming Scene
KC game shops operate on both sides of the Missouri/Kansas state line — Overland Park, Lenexa, and other Kansas suburbs are part of the KC gaming ecosystem. Strong shops serve different parts of the metro with events covering Magic: The Gathering, D&D Adventurers League, Pathfinder Society, and board gaming groups throughout the week.
Planet Comicon and the Comics Community
Planet Comicon Kansas City (March 27-29, 2026 at Bartle Hall) is the anchor event for the KC comics community. Running since 1999, the show has built a reputation for supporting comics creators and serious collectors. KantCon
KantCon, the Johnson County tabletop gaming convention, is the KC area's community-run gaming event — focused on tabletop RPG and board games with a warm atmosphere and loyal attendee base. It represents what the KC gaming community values when it's not performing for a national audience.
