Searches for "comic cons in Iowa" return bare calendar lists. Searches for "best game shops in Cincinnati" return outdated Yelp pages. Searches for "how to find a D&D group in Minneapolis" return five-year-old Reddit threads pointing to Discord servers that no longer exist. The communities are real — hundreds of thousands of people across nine states who care deeply about tabletop games, comics, anime, miniature painting, cosplay, science fiction, and the culture that connects all of these things. The online resources haven't kept up.
NerdCultureMidwest is an attempt to fix that. Specifically for the American Midwest: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas. Nine states covering more than thirty million people, a half-dozen major conventions, dozens of notable game shops, and communities that have been building without adequate coverage for years.
What This Site Is
An independent editorial project. Every convention guide is written based on officially announced event data, verified dates and prices, and firsthand accounts. Every game shop entry is researched — we look at reviews, community reputation, events calendars, and what the shop actually specializes in — rather than scraped from a database. Every how-to guide is written to answer the actual question being asked, not to fill a word count.
The site covers:
- Conventions: Deep first-timer guides for the anchor events (Gen Con, C2E2, Origins, Geekway, Planet Comicon, Anime Midwest) and a full calendar of regional conventions across all nine states.
- Game shops: City-by-city guides to Friendly Local Game Shops, covering what each shop specializes in, what community events they run, and what makes each one worth a visit.
- State guides: Broad coverage of each state's nerd culture scene — conventions, notable shops, community organizations, and the context that makes each state's scene distinct.
- How-to guides: Practical guides for navigating the hobby — finding an RPG group, starting to cosplay, getting into Warhammer 40K without expensive mistakes, starting a comic collection.
- The Con Planner: An interactive tool for filtering the full Midwest 2026 convention calendar by state, month, and type.
Our Editorial Standards
No convention, game shop, or publisher pays for coverage. The shops and events that appear in guides appear because they're genuinely good, not because they paid to be there. Sponsored listings don't exist on this site. When a convention guide says something is worth attending, that reflects editorial judgment.
This site is not affiliated with any convention organization, game publisher, or retail chain. When we cover Gen Con, we're not Gen Con LLC. When we cover a specific game shop, we're not that shop.
This site participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com. If you purchase a product through a link on this site, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This does not influence editorial recommendations — products are only recommended when they're genuinely useful to the audience this site serves.
Editorial Standards
Every claim about convention dates, badge prices, venue information, and shop details is sourced from official announcements or verified community reporting. We acknowledge when information is uncertain — see the Anime Midwest guide for how we handle events whose 2026 dates hadn't been announced — and we include disclaimers on pages where data should be verified before you book travel.
We correct errors when they're identified. If you find something factually wrong on this site, the contact page is the way to reach us.
Coverage Gaps
The Midwest is large and we are one project. There are conventions we haven't covered yet, game shops we don't have entries for, and communities whose depth our guides don't fully capture. The site is actively growing. If you know about something worth covering that we've missed, tell us through the contact page. Community knowledge is part of what makes a regional guide like this work.
Specific cities and states that currently have thinner coverage than they deserve and are priorities for expansion: Grand Rapids, Detroit, Green Bay, Appleton, Omaha, Lincoln, and smaller city scenes across Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri outside of the KC and STL anchors.
