Finding a tabletop RPG group in Kansas City is easier than in most Midwest cities of comparable size, because the Role-Players Guild of Kansas City (RPGKC) has been explicitly building that infrastructure since 1990. The nonprofit gaming organization maintains relationships with local shops, conventions, and publishers, and explicitly welcomes new members. It is the most direct front door to the KC gaming community that exists.
RPGKC: The Institutional Entry Point
The Role-Players Guild of Kansas City is one of the longest-running gaming nonprofits in the country. Their events calendar, Discord, and social media presence represent a community that has spent 35 years building the kind of welcoming, organized gaming infrastructure that serves both the experienced player looking for a new group and the newcomer who doesn't know anyone in the hobby. Go to RPGKC events and you will meet people who have been gaming in Kansas City for years and who are genuinely interested in connecting new players to appropriate groups and campaigns.
Game Shops and Organized Play
Kansas City metro game shops — on both the Missouri and Kansas sides of the state line — run regular organized play for all major systems. The competitive Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon communities are strong in KC, as is D&D Adventurers League and Pathfinder Society. Shops in Overland Park, Lenexa, and the KC suburbs serve the Kansas-side community that is functionally part of the same gaming ecosystem.
KantCon and the Convention Calendar
KantCon, the Johnson County tabletop gaming convention, is the KC area's community-focused gaming event — smaller and more intimate than Planet Comicon, specifically oriented toward tabletop RPG and board gaming. It's an excellent place to meet the organized gaming community in concentrated form. Planet Comicon (March, Bartle Hall) is the broader pop culture event where the KC gaming community's wider social network is visible.
