Origins Game Fair 2026

Origins Game Fair has been running since 1975 — one of the oldest gaming conventions in North America, and still one of the best. The five-day event at the Greater Columbus Convention Center offers 6,000+ events spanning board games, tabletop RPGs, miniature gaming, card games, LARP, and everything adjacent to those categories. Origins is not Gen Con in terms of scale, and it doesn't want to be. It's a convention where you can actually get a seat at the events you want, spend more time playing than waiting, and finish the weekend having gamed with hundreds of people instead of shuffling through crowds.

Origins vs. Gen Con: The Real Difference

Gen Con (Indianapolis, July 30-August 2) is the industry's showcase — the convention where games are announced, where publishers debut products, where 70,000 people converge on a city for the four biggest days in gaming. Origins is what gaming conventions look like when the primary goal is playing games.

Origins badges are cheaper. Events are easier to get into. The convention floor is walkable rather than overwhelming. Hotel rooms are available closer to the convention. The ratio of hours spent actually playing games to hours standing in line is dramatically better. For serious tabletop gamers who want to maximize actual gameplay, Origins is often the better choice even though it doesn't have Gen Con's cultural gravity.

2026 Dates and Registration

Origins Game Fair 2026 runs June 17-21 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, 400 N. High Street, Columbus, OH. Badge registration opened December 15, 2025. Event registration opened April 25, 2026. The refund deadline was April 15, 2026 for advance purchases.

Badge types: single-day badges are available for attendees who can only make part of the convention. Multi-day and full-event badges provide better value for four or more days of attendance. Premier memberships (through the Game Manufacturers Association) provided early hotel and event registration access.

What to Do at Origins

Origins is organized around events: pre-registered sessions for specific games at specific times. The event catalog covers everything from a quick 30-minute board game demo to a 4-hour RPG campaign session to a full-day miniature tournament. You can fill your schedule entirely with registered events, or mix scheduled events with the open gaming library, or spend the whole convention in the exhibit hall — all are valid approaches.

The Origins exhibit hall is smaller than Gen Con's but carries a good cross-section of publishers and retailers. Publishers often debut Origins-exclusive products or provide convention pricing on new releases. The dealer's room is walkable and browseable in a way that Gen Con's Exhibit Hall often isn't.

Columbus as a Convention City

Columbus hosts Origins with genuine enthusiasm — the Greater Columbus Convention Center is an excellent venue, downtown Columbus has good hotel coverage within walking distance, and the Short North neighborhood (a 15-minute walk from the convention center) provides restaurant and entertainment options well above the convention-adjacent standard. The Guardtower game shop (multiple Columbus locations) runs Origins-adjacent events and is worth visiting to see what Columbus's permanent gaming community looks like year-round.
