Geekway to the West 2026

Geekway to the West is not the biggest gaming convention in the Midwest. It is, for many of its 3,000 annual attendees, the best. The St. Charles board gaming convention — held May 14-17, 2026 at the St. Charles Convention Center — has built over 22 years what larger events can't manufacture: a genuine community that looks forward to reuniting each May, a Play-and-Win system that's become the model for board gaming events across the country, and an atmosphere of collaborative fun that's the direct opposite of the competitive intensity at most gaming tournaments.

The Play-and-Win System

Geekway's signature innovation is Play-and-Win: hundreds of games donated by publishers are available to check out from the library for free. You play them during the convention. If you win a session of the game, you enter a drawing. At the end of Geekway, winners take their game home. The system gives attendees the chance to try new releases, creates an incentive to actually play rather than just talk about playing, and sends people home with games they wouldn't have tried otherwise.

The Play-and-Win library typically includes 300-500+ titles donated specifically for the event, often including games that haven't been officially released yet. For publishers, it's a cost-effective way to get games in front of 3,000 engaged players. For attendees, it's the best way to try a year's worth of new releases in four days.

Convention Format

Geekway runs Thursday through Sunday. There are no events to register for in the traditional sense — the convention is open gaming, all the time, across the convention center floor. You bring games you own, check out games from the library, find other people who want to play, and spend the weekend at a table. Structured tournaments exist for specific games but they're supplementary to the primary experience of unstructured play.

The badge gives you access to the convention space, the library, and all evening programming including the Friday and Saturday night gaming sessions that run into the early morning hours. Many Geekway veterans consider the late-night sessions when the floor is quieter and the regulars are playing their favorite heavier games to be the best hours of the convention.

First-Timer Tips

Bring games you love and want to share — the convention culture rewards teaching others. Don't over-schedule; the value of Geekway is in the unplanned hours when you end up at a table with strangers playing something you'd never have sought out. The Play-and-Win drawing is not a raffle — you have to actually win a session of the game to enter, which means the games that go home with people are games that were genuinely played and tested.

Meals at the St. Charles Convention Center are available but the walkable Old Town St. Charles historic district a short distance from the venue has better options. St. Charles is a genuinely pleasant place to spend a weekend — the Missouri River frontage, the main street restaurants, and the general small-city-with-character atmosphere are all worth enjoying outside of gaming hours.
